Update

My girls have been keeping me very busy these days. I want to write an update about each of them.

Braigen: She gets up at 6:15, because the bus picks her up at 6:57. She is pretty good about getting up on her own. She likes to wait until the day before a paper is due to write it, even though she had 2 weeks. She really likes to come home and tell me how she got a 100% on that paper. I was clearly irritated with her for waiting until the last minute to write it. Not to mention the fact that the teacher will keep hers, and show it as an example to all of her other students:) I ran into my neighbor the other day, and she mentioned how we had the 2 highest readers in the 6th grade. Braigen had told me that she "scored off the charts", but my neighbor informed me that she is the top reader in the entire 6th grade(probably at least 300 students)! I am so proud
Braigen has been playing soccer for her middle school. It is a 6th-8th grade co-ed team, and they placed first on Friday night. They had a 2-1 victory against a team they had lost to previously. Talk about exciting, a great group of middle schoolers, feeling like they were celebrities that evening.

Braigen started playing the flute this year. She had her first concert, which she was very nervous about, last Thursday. She is growing up so fast, and really turning into a wonderful young lady. The concert was great, and she did awesome...even if I couldn't hear just her:)

All of my girls started Karate over the summer. We had planned for it to just be a summer activity, but none of them were ready to give it up after summer was over. They all are making really great progress, and they tested for their high gold belt on Saturday evening. Braigen was surprised at testing, along with 2 other girls, by skipping her high gold, and moving right to her orange belt. She is an apprentice in the program, and they see huge potential for her. Again...I am so proud!

Now...My Kali update. She is a great girl. She was recently accepted into the elementary peer pal group, where she will mentor a younger student. She is very excited about being chosen to participate, and can't wait to start working with the little girl they have selected for her. She is a born leader, and I know this role will fit her well. Kal celebrated her 9th birthday last month, and I really just can't believe how mature she is becoming. Her cake was made by my mom, and was as delicious as ever. They each get go pick what kind of cake they want my mom to make, and she always comes through for them.

She plays soccer also, and finally scored some points for her team this past Thursday. Greg coaches the team, along with my brother-in-law, Ryan. The season is over this week, with the final game being on Thursday. They have all done a great job.

Kali is part of the student council at her school, and got to participate in the local homecoming parade about a month ago. She was voted in by her class, and the school's student council walks in the parade and throws candy to the "crowds" of people! She loves being in the spotlight:)
I think I may have a cheerleader! Kali's school offered a program, where they could work with the high school cheerleaders. The group of girls met 3 times a week, for 3 weeks, teaching the girls cheers, and routines, so they could cheer at the high school football game. Kali was obviously not going to miss this opportunity, and when she ended up sick the day before the game, she was devastated. Luckily, her "bug" passed quickly, and she was able to go to school on Friday, and cheer that evening. She loved it, and BOY...was I proud!

Kali tested in Karate on Saturday evening also. She now has a high gold belt. She did awesome in testing, and was pleased to continue moving up in the ranks. (Having your sister skip the high gold belt, proved to be difficult for her, but she did manage to congratulate her anyway!!)

Tia, Tia, Tia.....I think her job right now, is to be CUTE!! She also tested in Karate, and while her focus is not exactly stellar, she did manage getting her high gold belt...and she was thrilled. She is doing great in preschool, and has a little friend named Melayna, that she spends all of her time with. She loves purses, money, and shoes, and well she is perfecting CUTE right now...and I couldn't be more proud!!

Now for myself...a very brief update:
In memory of our dear friend Maria who passed away almost a year ago, Deidra and I decided to cut our hair and donate it to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. This organization makes wigs from donated hair, for women who have been affected by cancer. I was able to go shoulder length, and donate 9" of hair.
I also started working at the elementary school, and getting paid for it!!! I was asked to take over lunch recess duty, so I only have to "work" a little over an hour a day. I figured I am always there anyways...may as well get paid for it:)
In other news: My dear friend Rich, is making huge progress. The Dr.'s are amazed at how quickly he is recovering. We are thrilled!
One more thing: I won the Publishers Clearing House 10 million dollar prize yesterday....FOR HALLOWEEN:)

How Fast Things Can Change

He, is my closest male friend.
He, always helps me to see the good, when I can't find any.
He, is a loyal, and loving husband to his wife Debbie, one of my closest girlfriends.
He, is a remarkable father to three almost grown children, loving them unconditionally.

We, confide in each other regularly.
We, I.M daily, even though we live just across the street from each other.
We, go to happy hour together occasionally, without our spouses.
We, have an incredible friendship, that I know will last forever.
We, do everything together....WELL, not everything!(he will have a good laugh over this one!!)

I, am missing him terribly right now, even though I have seen him more the last 3 days, than usual.
I, can't imagine a life with out having him to confide in.
I, am forgotten to him right now, but hopefully not forever.
I, cry at the thought of him not knowing me anymore.

Sunday afternoon, my dearest friend Rich, fell on his patio, while cleaning it. A close friend of his, who had stayed the night at his house, came to get Greg, and I, telling us he had hurt his head very badly. I raced across the street, to see his wife Deb, on the phone with 911, and him laying on the patio, blood pouring from the back of his head. He was airlifted to The Medical Center of the Rockies, and was placed in ICU, while cat scans were done. Thankfully, there were no broken bones in his skull, and 6 staples closed the wound on the back of his head. The cat scan showed some bleeding in the brain, which has since been reabsorbed, along with bruising and swelling of the brain which is to be expected considering the circumstances.

He remembers everyone, almost. Me, along with his best friend of 14 years, John, are the only forgotten ones to him. He says I seem familiar to him, but he just can't remember the details. I am heartbroken. I obviously know he has no control over this, and with time the memories of our incredible friendship may return.

He checks my blog occasionally, and I hope that when I am vivid in his mind again, he will come here to see, that losing his friendship would be a great loss for me. Thinking of you constantly, Rich, your long, lost friend for NOW. Me...I miss us

The Three Little Pigs...By Tia

Last night Tia was sitting at the table with Braigen and Kali, drawing pictures. I didn't know she was actually writing a story, The Three Little Pigs. She came out into the garage, where Greg and I were, and told me she wanted to read me her story. She then realized, she had no words on her paper, so she got a pen, and jotted down her version of the story. The story and enthusiasm she shared with me was worth recording, so I had her read it once more. I have included her telling the story, and the picture she drew. (note: the "words" she is reading are at the top of her picture, and watch during the video, as she says, "Oh no, here comes the big bad wolf", Greg happens to be walking out the door!) :)
This is not her normal voice, but the one she uses when she is full of excitement, sometimes the pitch...just pierces my ears, this time it made me laugh!

4 Year Old Preschool

Tia in the house, with her nails painted, before school
Tia before school in our front yard

Hooray, Hooray, Hooray...Tia started 4 y.o. preschool today. She goes to the same school that Kali goes to, just very different hours. I, actually was unsure if I was going to put her in again this year, mainly because of the cost and the hours. Yesterday I received a call from Miss Amy, she taught Kali in preschool, and had Tia last year for 3 y.o preschool. She asked me for a favor, and I was more than willing to do what she needed..this is the conversation we had:

Miss Amy: Danika, I need a favor.

Me: Sure, what's up?

Miss Amy: I need Tia in school

Me: Can I get her in the morning instead of the afternoon?

Miss Amy: No, but I really need Tia.

Me: Does she need to be there tomorrow?

Miss Amy: PLEASE!!

So, what was I supposed to do? We do love Miss Amy, and she has been very good to all of us, including letting us skip payments, because we didn't have the money. Tia loves going to school, and now she gets to go 4 days a week, from 12:15-3:00.
Moral of the story for me is: How do you turn down someone begging you to put your child in school? I couldn't, plus the fact that they love her so much, is just another thing to be proud of. Tia with Miss Amy in her class

Sad Story

I found this very tragic story through my blog surfing yesterday. Stephanie(NieNie), and her husband Christian, were in a small engine plane crash on August 16th in Arizona. The third passenger/pilot was killed shortly after the crash. NieNie and Christian survived, but continue to remain in critical condition in AZ. From what I read on NieNie's sisters blog, Christian suffered burns on 30% of his body, while NieNie suffered burns over 80% of hers. These 2 gorgeous people, are the parents to 4 young children. I believe that NieNie's 2 sisters are taking care of the children.
I have added the link to my blog, to make donations, should anyone feel the need to. All donations are going directly to medical expenses, and household expenses while these 2 fight the battle of their lives, to recover and make it home with their children again.

I watched this video, and sobbed. It really is one of my biggest fears, having something happen to me or Greg, and having to leave our children. While I know it is a blessing that Christian and Stephanie survived, the road to recovery is going to be very, very long. I hope that you will keep this family in your thoughts.

DemocraticNationalConvention and R.A.G.E.

The DNC is here! Over the last few months, I have said you would not catch me downtown during the convention. I did not want to go because there has been a lot of hype, about how crazy it was going to be. Not in the way of, out of control, but a LOT of people. I have heard that there will be around 40,000 in press alone, not to mention the politicians, and police/swat/bomb squads, and don't forget the spectators, people like us today, that went because it is historical for our time.
The real reason we went, is because Greg is a huge Rage Against The Machine fan, and they will be playing here on Wednesday. In order to get tickets to the show, you had to go downtown to Tent State, at Cuernavaca Park, and sign up with an I.D., give them your email address, and find out if you are going via email Tuesday Night. I am NOT going, I did not sign up, because you can't give the tickets away, and my luck, I would be the one who got tickets, and I would have to go, just so he could!!! Anyways, we ended up having a great time. Greg had to wait for over an hour to get is name in the lottery, and then we headed to the 16th St. Mall in Downtown Denver. The police were out in force, and swat teams were everywhere. Our friend/neighbor is a lot of fun, he makes these kind of experiences, that much more memorable. He carried a protest sign with him from Tent State through Downtown, he posed with Swat Teams, and Horseback Cops, and we had many good laughs today.

After the fun we had today, I have been trying to figure out how to get back down there before it gets too busy. I would love to get pictures of the Pepsi Center where most of the convention will take place. Hopefully, in the next few days, I will have more to post.

Locks of Love

How important is hair? Does it make you prettier, or sometimes uglier? If your teenager dies it Hot Pink, does it change the person that they are? To me, it is just hair, it is replaceable, unless of course you have some disease that prevents you from growing it, or takes it all from you.
Kali has donated to Locks of Love twice, and will probably be ready to again sometime before the year is over. I donated mine many years ago, and will be donating again sometime before the year is over.
Tia had never had a haircut until this past Saturday. I have to admit, it was mostly me. She had gorgeous hair, and the fact that we had never cut it, meant she was walking with original equipment...Hair that had been with her since she was born:( I have always said, to us it is just hair, if and when they want it cut, is up to them, and she had been getting the closer and closer. We even set up an appointment a month ago, but right after I scheduled, she back out...and I was so relieved:)

Saturday, with all of us, including Daddy, she did not back out. I got the bottom 2 inches for her baby book, and they cut another 10" to donate to Locks of Love. My girls do not lack in the confidence department, and she already thought she was the cutest girl ever, but now...well let's just say, as far as she is concerned she tops the charts!!!! Her smile is as bright as it has ever been, now she just doesn't have to move her hair so you can see it.
To top it off...My mother asked her what they did with all of her hair, to which she responded, " They took it from me to make wigs for little girls that don't have any hair, isn't that nice Grandma?" Too sweet, and really cute too!!!

3 Times Too Many

Three times in the last year I have had to say good bye to beloved kitties of mine. I know they were old, and that they can only stay while they are healthy, but leaving the vet with them no longer "here", is terribly sad. I have gone from 4 kitties to 1, in a little less than a year. I promise my next post will not be such a downer, but this one is in loving memory of Tasha, Dusty, and Sheeba, who have all touched my life, and will all be missed. And to my sweet Chester, who is still here with me, and without all of them, I know he will grieve also, they were all together for 18 years.

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
and pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this--the last battle--can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
Don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fears
You'd not want me to suffer, so.
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me til the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
it is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close--we two--these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Lost Love

After a tearful evening, I had hoped to wake up to a better morning, after all it is Valentine's Day. A day that, to me, is supposed to be full of love and appreciation, hearts and candy, and flowers too. A day to think about about not only how much you love everyone in your life, but also how much they love you...it hasn't gone quite as I had planned yet, although it is only 11:30a.m.:(
I woke up at 5:00, to see Greg leaving for work. I don't usually wake when he leaves, but after a stressful day and evening yesterday, I really did not get any quality sleep. Greg doesn't usually leave that early, with all of his tools still in the garage, which led me back to my crazy spectulations. I thought since he had clearly seen I was awake, that I would get a kiss good-bye, or even a good-bye, or maybe a "Happy Valentines Day", or "I Love you" would have even worked....I got none of these. He left our bedroom, to head out into the dark of morning, without even acknowledging us, on a day that is supposed to be filled with love.
I cried as I had done last night, and wondered will we both still be here next year this time? Will we reconnect at some point, or has too much damage been done...to much to forgive on my part, and too much to fix on his? I love him, but lately, it feels as though we may be past repair.
There is still a lot of today left, time to go to school, and celebrate with my girls. Time to make all of my important phone calls and express my love to great friends and a wonderful loving family. Time to reflect on all that he and I have shared, and lost. Tears....

**Added later:(He arrived home shortly after I posted this blog...with flowers, and apologies for yesterday. I hold on to the glimpses of hope he offers, because I can not yet imagine my life without him. I am going to try to remember, that even though he doesn't always love me the way I want him to, that he does love me with all that he has.)**

My Baby

My last baby turned 4 on January 29th. I know that being 4 doesn't really qualify you as a baby anymore, but a baby she remains to her mommy.

When she was born, she was not supposed to be the last baby at our house. She was going to be one of the 2 middle children. Complications during delivery, and in the first few days after her birth, made what could have been a hard decision, easy. She would be the last. (details in a later blog)

Tia Cooper is incredibly sweet. She has never had a haircut, and has got long, beautiful, brown hair. While the long hair came from me, it is a completely different texture than mine, one that I can only dream of! Everywhere we go, people are always telling her what beautiful hair she has, to which she smiles this innocent little smile and thanks them. She still loves to tell me how much she loves me, and honestly I melt everytime. Tia has fit the mold of being the baby to a "T", which also happens to be what we call her.

Tia started dance and preschool this past August, and she just loves it. Dance on Tuesday, school on Friday, and every day I wake up to her wondering, if it is either of the days she has something to do. 4 years gone so fast, almost unbelievable:(

My baby is 4

A baby no more

Christmas in a Flash

Our Christmas here was perfect. They called for a slight chance of snow, and well, it was the first White Christmas in a while. A White Christmas to me, means the snow is falling from the sky...often there is snow on the ground...but there is nothing like waking up on Christmas morning to see snow falling. It snowed all day.

The girls got up about 7, and Greg and I got up then and started moving, and we all finally made it downstairs about 7:30. The "big" girls got a Wii, and other more personalized things...and the "baby"(who will be 4 next month) got a new kitchen. Tia had such a good time, and really could not believe her eyes, that this man named Santa came to her house, and had left her just what she wished for. The older girls were very excited over their Wii, although I'm not so sure how much they still believe in Santa. I think that Kali is fairly confident he really does exist, and well I think Braigen just doesn't want me to know that she knows!!! Mrs. Santa brought Greg Guitar Hero 3, because well, she couldn't figure out how to wrap it for him, without the kids wondering how she knew they were going to get a Wii???

Greg's dad comes into town every year on Christmas. This has always worked well for everyone. Joe, Greg's dad, always brings a prime rib to cook for dinner along with the ham Deidra does. This year our dinner plan had to change slightly, because Joe's 11 o'clock arrival, was delayed to 3 0'clock, and that was not going to be enough time to get the prime rib done...so we cut it into steaks, and voila....mmmm..mmm...goodness! Ham, Steaks, mashed potatoes, cream corn, salad, green bean casserole...everything was scrumptious...as Tia would say!

This year our Christmas family was huge...My 5, plus Deidra's 4, our parents, Ryan's parents, Ryan's Brother and sister-in-law, Greg's Dad, my mom's best friend and her son, and last but not least Deidra's college friend, her husband and their 2 girls. Grand Total 22 I am sure others are just as big, but this was by far, the biggest Christmas ever for us. Great family, and great friends...It really does not get much better than this.

We finally made it back to our house about 9pm, and all I could think was, all the hype, and it's over already. I put so much into it because I love it, but it seems to be gone faster than I can take it all in.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas, and that the New Year will bring an even better "next year."

On a Much Lighter Note

I had to borrow this image off of Google, because it made me think of what might have happened to gentleman I was driving next to on the interstate today, at 80 mph. Obviously, we have all seen the occasional driver who needs to pick their nose, or the lady who puts her make-up on while sitting at the stop light. This gentleman, who was initially behind me, passed us doing at least 80, while brushing his teeth. I wondered at that moment, where was he going? I mean it was 3:00pm, and he was obviously in a hurry, he didn't even have time to brush them at home. Then came the next question, maybe he was coming from somewhere, not headed somewhere? He brushed and brushed, I'm guessing with a dry toothbrush, because I didn't actually observe him spitting out the window at any point.

I decided after observing while driving, that he had somewhere important to be. When he finished brushing his teeth, he took a really good long look in the rear view mirror, and started picking his nose, apparently not realizing he was not the only one on I-25 today.
Thank you unsafe driver, I needed a good laugh today!
If you have seen something outrageous while driving please share your story. I laughed so hard today!

Relief and Pain

Maria passed away yesterday, Saturday November 10th, at 4:30pm. The doctor thought that her passing would take place the day before, but unfortunately for her, her heart just would not stop beating. I saw Maria both Friday and Saturday at a Hospice Care Facility, and truth be told, she deserved to be able to move on. There is something about watching a person you love, suffer...and that is what was happening to her. She was such a good person, and you had to feel like it was just time, for her time here, to be over. She was not even close to the person I had lunch with, just one week before. That is all it took, to change everything.
Maria's husband, Quentin, said on Saturday morning, that it seemed so unfair that vital organs she needed to survive were consumed by cancer, yet her heart and lungs kept fighting for life...almost like they didn't understand what had changed.
Maria will be missed by so many, who are also grateful that she is no longer responsible for fighting this body ravaging disease.
R.I.P. Maria Kruse, you are already missed.

Watching

How do you say goodbye to someone you love? To watch them fight so many battles, and know that this, is the last one.
Maria was born to Ukrainian parents. They struggled to raise their children and come to America. She met the man of her dreams, and married him back in the early 70's, I believe. Before all of their friends started having babies, they had tried for years..She miscarried so many times that she gave up on having kids, and decided to be active in all of her dear friends' kids lives.
Deidra and I spent many nights with Maria and Quentin. They still live in the same house that we have so many fond memories of. Maria used to take us to the store and buy us "Blue Smurf Marshmallows", and she always made sure to have scented markers.
3 years ago Maria was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of breast cancer, I believe there are several hundred forms of breast cancer...she had the worst one...the one that they tell you, if you beat it now...it will return somewhere else sometime. She won the first battle.
In April she went in for her 6 month evaluation, she had been cancer free for 2 years, and the news was good again...there was no cancer.
In June she was once again diagnosed with cancer, only this time it was in her liver. A month and a half after getting a clean bill of health, she was told that there was nothing they could do for her this time. She tried to do chemo to prolong her life, but it was killing her faster than the cancer was. She went home and tried to enjoy her time, while in the back of head knowing that she was going to die.
Maria was admitted back into the hospital yesterday. I just can't believe that her life here with all of us who love her, will soon be gone. She is being eaten by this disease, robbing her of her dignity, and taking her mind. She is the first person in my life, that I have had to watch go through this horrific disease. I hate it for her, and for Quentin, and for everyone that loves her. It just doesn't seem fair.

Who Gets To Go?

10:00am Monday morning, World Series tickets go on sale to the public, expected sell out time 4 minutes. At most, 3 games will be played at Coors Field, approx. 18,000 seats per game are for sale. People from Colorado can't wait to get their tickets, not to mention all of the other people all over the country.

We all were sitting by our computers (this was the only way to purchase tickets), ready to click at what we considered 10 am........

12:00pm We find out that their system "crashed", and that only 500 tickets have been sold. We wait by the T.V., and look on the internet in hopes of finding out how and when ticket sales will resume. By 7:00pm, we know that ticket sales will continue sometime on Tuesday.....

11:30am Tuesday We all start prepping our computers for round 2 of ticket sales over the internet.

12:00pm World Series Tickets go on sale again.....Logging in, and clicking as fast as you can, getting to the page to pick your game....waiting...waiting....waiting

Watching the countdown clock that will refresh the page after 120 seconds over and over and over...and it clearly states on the waiting page that if you refresh the page you will go to the end of the line...so you wait.

2:58pm Tickets are sold out.....

I had to write about this because it is so strange to me that we would put ourselves through this. Almost 3 agonizing hours of hoping that I would be the next one into the site. That I would be able to purchase my 4 tickets to see my home team, in my hometown, in their first ever appearance at the World Series.

I won't say that I have been a "die-hard" fan, I don't really watch all of the games, but I am a fan, and I am excited to see them go to the next level of baseball. If you don't know the Rockies very well, up until about 2 months ago, they were never even considered to be a contender, and when they went on this awesome winning streak, we all watched...not expecting it to continue, but excited that it did.

After sitting on the computer for 3 straight hours today, I did not get "my" tickets. There really is no way to know how close I ever was to getting "my" tickets. I am not one of the lucky 54,000 people that will be sitting at Coors Field during one of the World Series games.....

........but I will watch, from my comfy couch in my cozy house, and continue cheering my team onto another sweep in the playoffs...

GO ROCKIES....Future World Series Winners
